Kothamalli thogayal is a simple dish made using coriander leaves, red chillies, tamarind, mustard seeds and ured dhal. These are first roasted in a teaspoon of oil and ground to a fine and thick paste.
Kothamalli thogayal tastes well with rice and curd rice. This also goes well with idly or dosa.

Kothamalli Thogayal / Coriander Leaves Thuvayal
Kothamalli thogayal is a simple dish made using coriander leaves, red chillies, tamarind, mustard seeds and ured dhal. These are first roasted in a teaspoon of oil and ground to a fine and thick paste. Kothamalli thogayal tastes well with rice and curd rice. This also goes well with idly or dosa.
Ingredients
- Coriander Leaves -1 big bunch
- Oil - 1 tsp.
- Mustard Seeds – 1 tsp.
- Ured Dhal – 2 tsps.
- Red Chillies – 4 or 5
- Asafoetida – 1/4 tsp.
- Tamarind – small lime sized
- Salt – ½ tsp.
- Water – 1/4 cup
Instructions
- Wash and clean coriander leaves and chop finely.
- In a pan heat oil and add mustard seeds, ured dhal, red chillies, asafoetida till the dhal turns golden brown.
- When it cools down grind with coriander leaves, tamarind and salt.
- Add little water while grinding. Thuvayal should be thick.
- Serve with rice or idly or dosa.
