Puli upma is a traditional upma made with rice flour and tamarind water, adding some spices. This is my favourite upma. My mother used to make this. This is simple upma recipe. With tanginess of tamrind and the spices added this upma is awesome.
Ingredients
- Rice Flour – 1 cup
- Tamarind – small lemon sized.
- Turmeric Powder – ¼ tsp.
- Salt – as needed
- Gingelly Oil – 3 tbsps.
- Mustard Seeds – ½ tsp.
- Ured Dhal – ½ tsp.
- Asafoetida Powder – ¼ tsp.
- Curry Leaves – a handful
- Red Chillies – 2
Instructions
- Soak tamarind in hot water and extract 1 cup of tamarind juice.
- In a vessel add rice flour, salt and turmeric powder and mix well.
- Slowly add the tamrind extract and mix well without forming lumps.
- In a pan, heat oil and add mustard seeds.
- When it splutters, add ured dhal, curry leaves, asafoetida and broken red chillies and fry for half a minute.
- Now add the rice flour mixture and keep in low flame and stir often so that pulima does not stick to the pan.
- Cook well till the rice flour cooks well and it becomes grainy.
