Ulundhu Sadam or Black Ured Dahl rice and Ellu (sesame seeds) thuvayal is a traditional Tirunelveli dish. This is usually prepared for teenage girls whenthey attain puberty. Black ured dhal is rich in minerals including potassium, magnesium, iron, phosphorous and calcium which play a crucial role in maintaining the density of bones.
Consuming ured dhal dishes during menstruation reduces abdominal and muscle cramps. It also addresses the problem of scanty period and regularizes the menstrual cycle. Regular consumption of sesame seeds along with hull provides good amounts of calcium, especially for women which in turn contributes to healthy bones.

Tirunelveli Special Karuppu Ulundhu Sadam, Ellu Thuvayal

Ingredients
Ured Dhal Rice / Ulutham Paruppu Sadam:
- Rice – 1 cup
- Split Black Urad dal – ½ cup
- Garlic Cloves – 20
- Grated Coconut – ¼ cup
- Salt – as needed
- Water – 4 cups
Ellu (Sesame Seeds) Thuvayal:
- Black or White Sesame Seeds – 3 tbsp
- Red Chillies – 5 or 6
- Tamarind – Small gooseberry size
- Salt – as needed
- Oil – ½ tsp.
Instructions
Ured Dhal Rice / Ulutham Paruppu Sadam:
- In a pan add a teaspoon of oil and roast ured dhal till you get nice smell.
- Add rice to this and wash well.
- Take a pressure cooker and add this rice and ured dhal. To this add garlic cloves, salt, grated coconut and water and mix well.
- Pressure cook the rice till three whistles and switch off the stove.
- Mix well and serve hot with Ellu thuvayal.
Ellu (Sesame Seeds) Thuvayal:
- Soak tamarind in little water.
- In a pan, dry roast the sesame seeds by keeping in medium flame till it splutters. Do not burn the seeds. Otherwise it will turn bitter.
- Transfer to a vessel and wash well.
- In the same pan roast the red chilles for a minute.
- In a mixie, take the sesame seeds, tamarind, red chillies and salt and grind to a smooth and thick paste. Add very little salt. Otherwise it will become salty.
- Serve this ellu thuvayal with ured dhal rice.
