In this season, we get lots of mangoes. Mangai thokku is a pickle which is made from raw mango. We make thokku by peeling the raw mangoes and grating them and adding some spices. Mango thokku will be very tasty and tangy and it goes well with curd rice. It also goes well with idly / dosa.
When I was young, I used to mix mango thokku in hot rice and have it. It will be so spicy and tasty.

Mangai Thokku / Grated Raw Mango Pickle
In this season, we get lots of mangoes. Mangai thokku is a pickle which is made from raw mango. We make thokku by peeling the raw mangoes and grating them and adding some spices. Ingredients
- Raw Mangoes – 2
- Red Chilli Powder – 6 tsp.
- Salt – 4 tbsp or as needed
- Asafoetida – 1 tsp.
- Fenugreek Seeds – 1 tsp.
- turmeric Powder – 1 tsp.
- Gingelly Oil – two ladle full
- Mustard Seeds – 2 tsp.
Instructions
- Wash and peel the raw mangoes and grate them in a grater and keep aside.
- Dry roast fenugreek seeds for a minute and grind into a powder.
- Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds.
- When it splutters add grated mango and mix well by keeping the stove in simmer.
- Add turmeric powder, red chilli powder and salt and mix well.
- Cook till oil oozes out of the pickle and it cooks well.
- At last add fenugrrek seeds powder and asafoetida and mix well.
- Switch off the flame and when cooled keep in an air tight container.
- There should be a layer of oil on top of the pickle.
- There should be a layer of oil on top of the pickle.
- If the oil is less, heat oil in a pan and let it cool down.
- Pour the oil over the pickle.
Notes
- Always use dry spoon for taking the pickle. Do not keep the spoon inside the pickle.
- If you want the pickle to be less spicy add less chilli powder.
