This is an interesting dish which we prepare with elephant foot yam. This goes well with hot steamed rice or dosa.

Senai Kizhangu Kola Urundai Kuzhambu / Elephant Foot Yam Ball Gravy

Ingredients
For Making The Urundai / Balls
- Senai Kizhangu / Elephant Foot Yam - 2 cups graated
- Fried Gram - ½ cup
- Fennel Seeds - 1 tsp.
- Cloves - 2
- Dry Red Chillies - 3
- Garlic - 2 cloves
- Salt- as needed
- Oil - for frying the balls
For The Gravy / Kuzhambu
- Grated Coconut - ½ cup
- Dhania Seeds / Coriander Seeds - 1 tbsp.
- Cumin Seeds - 1 tsp.
- Onion - 2 finely chopped
- Tomato - 2 finely chopped
- Garlic - 3 cloves
- Ginger - 1 inch piece
- Dry Red Chillies - 3
- Salt - as needed or 1 tsp.
- Turmeric Powder - ¼ tsp.
- Garam Masala - ¼ tsp.
- Oil - 2 tbsps.
Instructions
For Making The Urundai / Balls
- Take fried gram in a mixer and grind to a fine powder.
- Grind the cloves, fennel seeds, red chillies and garlic to a fine paste.
- Now mix the powdered fried gram, spice paste, elephant yam and salt and make like dough. Sprinkle little water if necessary.
- Make small balls and keep aside.
- Heat oil in a pan and deep fry the balls till golden brown and keep aside.
For The Gravy / Kuzhambu
- In a pan heat ½ tsp. of oil and roast cumin seeds and coriander seeds.
- Then add red chillies and ginger and garlic and fry till raw smell goes.
- Switch off the flame and let them cool down.
- Now grind the roasted ingredients along with grated coconut and tomatoes to a fine paste.
- Heat remaining oil in a pan and add oinions and fry till golden brown in color.
- You can now add the ground paste, salt, turmeric powder and 2 cups of water and boil.
- When it starts boiling, simmer the flame and cover and cook for five minutes.
- Now add the fired balls and cook in low flame for 10 minutes.
- The balls will absorb the water in the gravy and become thick. So if needed add some more water.
- Switch off the flame and serve hot with rice or dosa.
